Onipaʻa Peace March

Mauna ʻAla to ʻIolani Palace Jan. 17, 2024

The illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom began on January 17, 1893, with a coup d`etat against Queen Liliʻuokalani on the island of Oʻahu by subjects of the Hawaiian Kingdom, United States citizens and foreign residents residing in Honolulu. A majority of the insurgents were foreigners. They prevailed upon American Minister John L. Stevens to call in the U.S. Marines to intimidate the queen, a violation of their international treaty by the United States, insisting without justification that they needed to protect United States citizens and their interests, an action that effectively helped the rebellions to proceed with the overthrow of the Hawaiian Government.

H.R.H. Princess Owana Kaʻōhelelani and delegation marched from the Royal Mausoleum to ʻIolani Palace on January 17, 2024, marking 131 years of the illegal overthrow caused partially by the United States.
